What It Really Feels Like to Be in the Sandwich Generation

Easter Sunday was beautiful—and exhausting. I spent the day with my grandkids, my kids, and my mom. It was full of smiles, egg hunts, laughter... and a whole lot of quiet caregiving behind the scenes.

We laughed. We shared a meal. We posed for pictures. And in the background of it all, I was keeping an eye on my Mom—not because she needed help, but because I wanted to make sure she was enjoying herself, feeling included, and surrounded by the people who love her most.

It was our first Easter without my Dad. He passed away just six weeks ago.

That made this day feel heavier and more meaningful all at once. My son and daughter-in-law were helping keep an eye on Mom too. Little things—offering her a seat in the shade, checking in between conversations. The kind of support you don’t announce, but you always notice.

That’s what it means to be part of the Sandwich Generation.

You’re in the middle. Supporting the people who raised you, while also being there for the people you raised. You’re the bridge—physically, emotionally, and often financially.

There’s real joy in that role. But there’s also exhaustion, responsibility, and a quiet kind of grief that sneaks up at the edges. A lot of us are out here carrying that load—not because we have to, but because we love the people in our lives.

That’s why I created The Sandwich Generation Advisor.

I’ve lived it. I still live it. And I know firsthand how hard it can be to care for others while also trying to prepare for your own future.

If you’re feeling this too, just know—you’re not alone. There are ways to protect your future and theirs.

This blog is for you. The parent, the child, the caregiver, the one who keeps showing up.

We may not be able to hold onto every moment forever, but we can cherish the ones we still have—and build something stronger in the process.
